Her hand lingered on the handle for a moment, before she turned quickly, leaning her back against the door, her face in her hands. A little laughter escaped her; it was a quiet, melodic sound, tinged with disbelief. It was all a bit ridiculous, wasn’t it?
She was being ridiculous. It couldn’t be helped, though; her feelings weren't entirely under her control tonight. She shook her head quickly, then peeked out between her fingers. “Hey,†she said softly, swapping out her usual, slightly more formal
hello. Tonight was a night spent out of character, she thought distantly. She met Kendrick’s eye.
She knew he’d be waiting for her. Somehow, she just knew it. Her heart gave a happy squeeze. “I’m so sorry I’m late,†she said, lowering her hands. She felt genuine, and she meant it, but after a moment of eye contact, her smile was back in full force; she couldn’t help it, she had too much energy and too much love, and it was spilling out of her. “Sorry,†she said again, shaking her head, looking a cross between embarrassed and happy-stunned and not really feeling sorry at all this time. She tucked her messy hair behind her ears on both sides, glancing down at the ground for a second. She took a breath and exhaled slowly, trying without much success to dim the overwhelming feelings.
When she looked at him again, though, she smiled again, her cheeks heating up.
