He'd actually done it! Sam hadn't stopped smiling all afternoon, even after saying goodbye to Louise and promising that he would be over to see her that evening. It had been a slightly rash promise to make, given that this was meant to be a family trip to the highland games, albeit a working weekend as well, but this was an exception. Besides, under the circumstances, he was sure his parents and sister would understand. Enitan was potentially a different matter. When his mother and the children had returned from their hike he had intended to talk with Enitan, but all three kids had immediately collapsed in an exhausted heap. As Sam had expected, the children had
galumphed up the mountain like excited labrador puppies while his mother had quietly charmed herself to levitate once she got tired and thus returned perfectly relaxed. It gave him a chance to talk with his parents first, and naturally they were delighted that they would be welcoming Louise to the family.
Sam had expected telling his daughter to be more problematic. Instead, he began by saying how important Louise was to him, how important they both were, and how much he loved Enitan, and wanted everyone to be happy... Enitan tipped her head to one side and asked if he'd finally given Louise the pretty ring she'd found while they were moving, and Sam had laughed with relief, and the little girl had joined in, and while she thought it would be a
much better idea if she came along to see Louise this evening, the promise of being allowed to choose where they ate dinner that evening had appeased her and she'd agreed to spend the evening with her grandparents and cousins.
Having left them to find a suitably child-friendly dinner venue Sam headed towards the portkey station, looking around for something he could take for Louise. Nowhere seemed to be selling champagne and without any muggle money to his name he wouldn't be able to buy any once he reached his destination. Instead he settled for a bunch of purple and white heather tied with tartan ribbon, and now as he approached the portkey, he was so happily distracted he stepped in a
rabbit hole and almost turned his ankle. A rotund elderly witch patted his arm and asked if he was alright, but Sam was still smiling. "I'm fine. You'd think the bunnies would be more careful where they put their holes...or maybe it was a hare. Though it's a bit late for
March hares, don't you think?" he asked as the old woman
chortled merrily.
Moments later, he was back in London in a street that was comfortably familiar, and only a couple of minutes later than he had intended he was knocking on Louise's door. It opened almost immediately and it seemed to him that she practically pulled him inside. I've missed you too" he whispered when they finished the kiss. Once she'd led him into the living room he belatedly remembered the flowers which he now held out to her. "I wanted to bring champagne, but I wasn't sure how good the malt-whisky flavoured variety would taste" he teased.
