She wasn’t, in any way, going to cooperate with this little PR stunt. She wasn’t. Not at all. Only her boss sort of threatened to take away her badge and clearance if she didn’t. And she liked both her badge and her clearance. Waltzing in with her head held high to level 2 she was self aware enough to realize that she was getting both sympathetic and amused faces from her colleagues and that she did not like where this was leading.

So she’d sort of blown apart half of a house and mutilated a great deal of the property so that it was blackened soil and nothing would grow upon it for a few decades. Or after a thorough curse-breaking cleanse. The raid hadn’t exactly been easy and they HAD, ultimately, gotten the dark artifact in question without any casualties to speak of at all, thank you. So what if said owners of the house were causing a stir and it’d been front page on the prophet? Personally she thought it was a great shot of her but then she’d been quite busy blowing the protective wards apart.

Peaking her head in towards the meeting room she could barely make out who the bloke was she was being forced to, well, babysit was the only word for it. Why she was being bloody punished for doing her job was beyond her, really. Well she knew why, of course, but bureaucratic bullshit was part of why she resorted to the aforementioned blowing shit up.

Best to just ... rip this first meeting off quick yea? “Hullo.” she greeted sullenly. “I’m your new-“ babysitter, was the right word but not nice to admit to out loud just yet. “We will be working together.” Till the end of eternity or the higher ups decided that their mutual punishment was over. “Hayes.” she introduced herself curtly, almost as an afterthought. She was pretty sure she’d seen him around the ministry before. “We should go get our assignment.” Ugh. She didn’t want to go back out to the assignment desk, though. It would feel too much like doing the walk of shame.

It hadn’t seemed like a big deal, but apparently it was. Ashley had done this a hundred times before. He always worked alone, unless he was working with Indiana or Cheyenne, but he had never thought it would be such a big deal to go after something alone. He had been in England for like teo years now, fighting little beats, pest managing, and meeting interesting people. The American ministry had given him full license to travel anywhere and do nearly anything up to this point, and while he had always been an “independent contractor” for the American Ministry, that wouldn’t fly here under the Union Jack. As an American, he was already at a disadvantage. His coworkers thought he was cocky and incompetent already, and he’d barely been there a day.

He had taken down a lethifold by himself. He ought to be a hero. Of course, that was not what the British Ministry thought. They thought he ought to be more of a team player, giving into their jurisdiction and letting them handle their own messes. Still, a person was nearly hurt, and he saved her single-handedly. This said, it wasn’t the cleanest rescue. She was naked and scared in her apartment, while he made her drop her towel to make sure it wasn’t the beast hiding—it wasn’t—but he found the thing and killed it. It ended up being a mess of paperwork thought, and the American Ministry had enough of Ashley pulling strings and riding free doing as he pleased. He supposed he knew getting paid to do whatever he wanted wouldn’t last forever, but he never thought a probationary transfer was in the cards. Especially not one where he was being watched over by not just an auror, but a scored one at that. He had heard of Roslyn, of some of the things she had been in trouble for. It was a mixed match, two troublemakers watching one-another, but he still felt he got the short end of the stick.

He had never been given a proper assignment before. He always just read the newspapers and found clues, found beasts lurking where they didn’t belong and “took care” of them. Indiana would preferred if Ashley took care of them in a less final way, but Ashley didn’t particularly care for beasts. He cared for people, and that was the big difference between them. Indiana cared too much about procedure. Sure, if it was safe to relocate, sure. However, certain beasts were pests—lethifolds particularly were “dark creatures” more akin to dementors than creatures with the ability to be docile—and he was willing to take them out whenever he could.

He looked up at Hayes as she introduced herself, with a charming and easygoing g smile. At least she was pretty. Last thing he wanted was to be holed up with a cop lady who wasn’t even attractive AND wasn’t fun or funny. He had a feeling she was going to be a hard-ass. “Morigan. Ashley Morigan. You can call me Ash, I know, weird name. You should see my brother’s.” He teased. She was all business, so he made a point to be as easygoing and ladi back as possible, partly to annoy her but partly to play contrast to the stick lodged in her rear. Maybe it would make her more comfortable…. Or maybe it would just annoy her, and at this point either seemed good. He was a little bitter that they gave him a babysitter in the first place.

“Oooh, so we’re getting put on assignment are we? Great. Sounds like paperwork will follow.” His least favorite part.

She wouldn't admit it but his voice disarmed her a bit. She struggled to stay grumpy but her lips twitched a little when he introduced himself. She ran an appraising gaze over him again, noting he seemed pretty fit, before her eyes went back up to his. Attractive and cocky - maybe she needed to get inspected for curses or something. It could be worse, though, she knew. He could look like Jenkins. Though maybe she was underestimating just how distracting he was going to be. Why did some men have stupid pretty eyes? She'd caught herself staring on more than one occasion recently and wondered where these attractive men had been the last few years. Maybe she'd been blind with rage.

Or Merlin had blessed her with nice views and temptation. Her self control had never been... her strongest suit.

Still. She wouldn't let Ash- Morigan's pretty face and general fitness distract her. Dammit but she didn't want to go on and make the mistake of liking him. But he was being genial and pleasant and not acting at all like this was the punishment it was meant to be, for the both of them. "There's an intern that can be bribed with muffins and coffee." she blurted out, a helpless grin forming on her lips, before she laughed. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad? She bit her lip, before dropping her shoulders in defeat and stalking towards the American wizard. She sat down, looking at the man expectantly, before speaking. "So what are you in for then?" she finally asked, curious despite herself, and abandoning going back out towards the missions desk.

There would be plenty to do after, she knew, and she couldn't help but want to know.

“Best stock up on the muffins, then, if bribing the intern will get me better assignments.” He teased, smiling at her. She seemed a bit less uptight than at first glance, and this made him feel a bit more comfortable about it. He smiled at her as she sat down, taking the seat across from her. He bit his lip lightly as she asked him why he was being babysat. What was the point in lying?

“Well….” He started. “Up until this month, I was a part of MACUSA.” He admitted. “Independent contractor, going wherever I wanted and doing whatever I wanted. Got a little…” He hesitated. “Mixed up in some jurisdictional crap here, and MACUSA demanded I either transfer here or get lit.” He laughed a bit. “It’s a long story, but if you want to put off the assignment, I’m sure we have time.” He laughed lightly.

“Beast hunting runs in the family, you know? We’ve always been fighting creatures and relocating them and dealing with the dark ones and stuff. I grew up a bit like a soldier, with a shotgun in my right hand and a bear trap in my left.” He joked. “What about you? What’s got you on babysitter duty?” He teased. “Just don’t like you much?” He teased again. He shifted in his seat, catching her eye.

"Thats a good investment for the future." she teased back, eyes sparkling, as she unwound from the tense set her shoulders had automatically stuck to. He had a nice smile, she decided, and she withheld a grin as she saw him bitting at his lips. It was a terrible habit, one she was intimately, familiar with and it brought forth a rush of, well, empathy. She leaned forward, her interest an curiosity apparent on her face, as she listened to the abridged version of his story. "Political red tape is such bollocks." she agreed, wrinkling her nose a bit. What she could read from the situation was that they were a bit too similar in temperament for her not to realize their partnership wasn't as well thought out as the brass liked to think.

"I've always been more curious than frightened of creatures." she admitted, feeling a bit sheepish. It was the Gryffindor in her, no doubt about it. Some of the things that seemed dangerous could be beautiful. "You are from the American wild. Savages, the lot of you." she teased, her mouth quirking up into a grin. "Well-" how to put this? "I sort of blew up a private residence?" she admitted sheepishly, though the swell of indignant anger was there.

"We were conducting a raid on the home, looking for a particular dark artifact and we couldn't find it." it had been maddening because the whole place had stunk like dark magic. "I went through different ward options and came across a part of the house that had a strong ward along a wall that led to... seemingly nothing. I sort of used brute force and it ended up blasting part of the house out and scorching the surrounding area due to the backlash." it still irritated her she was paying lip service because the owners were seeking reparations for their property. "The owners denied knowledge of the artifact, since they supposedly rent the place out so its ... tricky." she said with a roll of her eyes. "I'm not really sorry about a little property damage, especially when its a detriment to people like that." she huffed, glancing back at Ashley she returned his grin and leaned forward. "I'm pretty sure this is a bad idea." she whispered, eyes amused, as she referenced the aforementioned babysitting duty.

Between them she was, probably, the more responsible one which shouldn't be a reassurance to her boses. Honestly what were they thinking?
