The taste of her cherry chapstick [Polina]

They had not been likely friends. She was quiet, shy, and careful. She rarely had her nose out of a book unless Venera Delcheva was dragging her around campus on a tirade. Even so, they had become friends, slowly and surely, over the period of a few months since that big Melioration test he had wanted her help with. She was the year below him, but she was gifted—a future healer—while he considered himself a future Artistic Flyer, first and foremost, and future alchemist and potioneer as a secondary career. She was better at healing than he was, and he needed her help. It was really just for the one topic, for the one test, but they had continued to meet up after, comparing notes and fussing over their respective diet and exercise routines. He often invited her to run with him in the mornings, they would talk through breakfast regularly, and sometimes skip dinner in the library to get in a few hours of study when no-one was looking. Nikon didn’t look like someone who studied a lot, but in a lot of ways he was like his brother. He was a perfectionist, just like Aleksei, and liked to do well for himself.

He leaned back in the chair, his hands heavy and stretching out his back. “So, tell me more?” He asked, looking at her. She was on a short rant, and he loved seeing her be passionate about something after-all. Despite being a Koldo student, he had always liked her. He didn’t care about blood, about school rivalry. He liked the culture of Koldo better, really. They were more open, more progressive, and as a mostly-gay student, he liked that. He wished they were as progressive in Russia as they were in some other countries, though there was a long way to go before he would have felt comfortable being himself in any way, shape, or form. As it was, he hid a lot of his private, out of school, life the same way he hid his tongue piercing and cartilage piercing and tattoos.

After it seemed she was finished going on, he smiled and sighed. “She sounds a little infuriating to me, too, but I don’t think you realize how much you like her.” He laughed, noticing easily that her feelings for her roommate, Venera, seemed to be a little more than what Polina tried to make it seem. He knew Polina cared for the girl, they were best friends and the whole school knew that, but Nikon was especially good at reading subtext. This was only true, likely, because of the tension between himself and his own roommate, Rodion. He was, himself, getting frustrated. He knew Rodion felt something too. He could taste the sexual tension between them, noticed the way the other looked at him when he was less than fully dressed. He noticed the way he looked at him even when he was fully dressed. It wasn’t the look of a simple rival, nor a fond smile of a friend. It was hungry. So, he had teased and taunted. He had made himself available. Nothing. He was getting annoyed. He could, of course, make the first move but Nikon wasn’t that kind of boy. He liked to be chased, and felt he deserved that much attention, at least.

“Have you ever thought that maybe, you two…?” He offered, trying to take the pressure off of her, and give her an easy in.

Nikon really was great. Polina thought he deserved some kind of medal for actually sitting there, listening to her mini rant. It wasn’t uncommon for her to be asked to help with some homework, or a test, since her entire life was basically books, books and more books. She was normally happy to help, but Polina had never been so grateful for someone asking for her help as when Nikon had asked for help with a Melioration magic test. Otherwise, she’d have never given him a chance to be friends. Apollinariya had just assumed that they were completely different, completely incompatible. It had turned out, over the last few months, that they actually had some pretty important things in common. He knew her secret, understood it in a way that no one else could or would, and it was great. Nikon kept her motivated when she had the urge to give in to her feelings, her cravings. He kept her strong. She was very grateful.

Polina had also found out that he happened to be a pretty good listener too, as she vented her frustrations about her very best friend, Venera, while she (luckily) wasn’t around. It wasn’t really as if Venera had actually done anything wrong, per se. In fact, had Apollinariya been a little braver then perhaps this wouldn’t have been an issue at all, and she and Nikon wouldn’t be having the conversation they were having now. He pressed her for more information, and the younger witch huffed as she threw her hands in the air before continuing to vent to her companion.

“Well,” Polina began, “sometimes when she drags me around the school, you know, I’m looking at her - practically staring at her - and she just doesn’t even notice!” She huffed, folding her arms across her chest. “I mean, I know I’m pretty short in comparison to her, but how hard is it to just look down at me and once in a while?! It’s so… so.. infuriating!” Venera had a nice face, or so Polina thought, surely it wasn’t… weird to want to see her friend’s pretty eyes more often... was it?

“Of course I like her,” Polina quickly replied, a confused but slightly panicked expression on her face. “We’re best friends. I wouldn’t hang out so much with someone I hate.” It was more than that, Polina suspected. She had never felt like this about any other girl. She craved Venera’s attention, found herself going along with things she’d never usually do in a million years, just to make Venera happy. However, Polina had no clue what to do about it. Was she actually in love with her best friend? None of the novels she had read had ever prepared her for this… they were all about princes sweeping princesses off of their feet, or wizards wooing a beautiful witch. Not… witches and witches being together.

Her brow creased as Nikon asked an seemingly unfinished question. She kept silent for a few seconds, trying to figure out exactly what Nikon was asking her. “What do you mean?” She asked quickly, not really waiting for him to answer before she continued. “Do I like her as a… you know…” She squirmed in her seat uncomfortably, unwilling to finish her own sentence, feeling incredibly awkward and embarrassed. “But… I mean, she probably doesn’t feel the same, right?”

Nikon raised a brow, as Polina came awfully careful to admitting what she was feeling was not what she had insisted thusfar. Nikon didn’t know Venera all that well. Vee was more of, well, Aleksei’s type of companion than Nikon’s, truly, though he was exclusing present company. Polina was great, and if she really cared for Venera, then probably Venera was cooler than he thought, too. Even so, Nikon had never made time to know the young Tzartiza beyond the obvious—she was the daughter of the Survival professor, who was a bit eccentric, and close with Fisker, the Nautica professor. He knew she usually wore black, liked spooky things, and had punched Kalevi Aare in the face during the dueling tournament (which truly made Nikon a fan, as he loved things like that. You go, girl).

“You don’t think she feels the same? Why’s that? Does she not pay attention to you at all?” He wondered, his voice a touch pressing. “I think you’re cute, Polina. You two would make a cute couple, if you wanted.” He teased. She hadn’t quite said the words he needed to say, though he knew in his heart he was right regardless. “She’s too stupid for you if you doesn’t see that.” He smiled. He knew Polina struggled a little with her self-image, in similar ways that he did, but the two of them differed on how they responded to that self-image issue. Nikon tackled it by seeking out partners to validate his appearance, leaving behind a staggering body count for someone who had only started within the last year. Polina seemed to suck into herself, not letting anyone see her for fear of rejection. As before, he didn’t know Venera, so he couldn’t be sure, but he hoped that she would like Polina back. It wasn’t usual, same-sex relationships, but it was still normal and he was certain of that.

“You know, I have a similar issue, really. My roommate….” He shrugged, looking away. “He notices me and I know it, but he won’t do anything about it. You sure Venera doesn’t notice? Maybe she’s just reserved, too. Or maybe, like Rodion, she’s just too yellow to act on her feelings.” He huffed a little. He glanced at her, to see if she was following his complaint. He wasn’t mad about Rodya’s feelings. He was mad that he wasn’t acting on them at all. It was annoying to know he was wanted by someone he wanted, but have them not dare try.

After awhile, he sighed. “You and I should date, instead. Forget them both.” He teased, not seriously considering it but also not getting the idea that was popping up under his nose. It would be too easy for them to. Best of all, Venera and Rodion would be madly jealous.

“Well… I…” Polina stammered, trying to think of a valid reason why her best friend wouldn’t see her as anything more than that. “I don’t know!” She blurted out, defeated as she let her hand drop into her lap, gazing over at Nikon with a frown. “I mean obviously she pays me attention.” Polina added, with a small smile playing at the corner of her lips, having the distinct feeling that she knew where Nikon was going with this line of questioning. She blushed and ducked her head bashfully as Nikon said he thought she was cute. It was sweet of him to say so. “Couple?” She breathed, raising her head back up to look at him with wide eyes. “Do you really think we…? That she…?” Her heart fluttered in weird ways that she’d never really felt before at the suggestion. The idea excited her, thrilled her even, and she wasn’t so sure what to make of it.

“You do?” Polina asked, trying not to smile but failing. She wasn’t alone. This wasn’t weird if Nikon had this issue too. It was a blessed relief, and Polina could have pounced on Nikon and hugged him there and then. “That’s such a shame,” Polina responded, feeling bad that this dormmate of Nikon’s wasn’t acting on their feelings. “I hope he gets his act together soon.” He mentioned Venera again, claiming she might be reserved, and Apollinariya laughed loudly. “Venera? Reserved?” That didn’t sound like her friend, she was always the one dragging Polina here, there, and everywhere out of her comfort zone. But he did have a point. They clearly didn’t want to make the first move, but perhaps their respective crushes also didn’t want to make the first move. “Maybe… But I don’t want to be the first to say anything either… and I’m guessing maybe you don’t either?” She smiled at him, with a sheepish shrug, having a hunch she was right.

“Excuse me?” Polina gasped, her mouth completely agape as she stared at Nikon as if he had gone completely insane. “Me… and you… date?” She blinked rapidly, trying to process the completely out-of-the-blue proposition he had just made. No character in her storybooks prepared her for this. “What for?” Polina asked innocently. “You don’t like me in that way, do you? Because… I don’t.” She tried to say it softly, in case she was suddenly hurting his feelings. But she was sure that he didn’t like her romantically. “And… if I’m with you, I can’t date Venera.”

For a moment, Polina didn’t seem to get the joke. He laughed a bit. “No, no, it’s not like that. You’re not exactly my type.” He teased, having just confessed to liking another boy.  â€œWould just be easier if we did.” He admitted, sighing wistfully. Liking girls would have made everything easier for him, and Polina was quite the catch otherwise. “Besides, I bet they’d be hopelessly jealous of us.” He reveled in the thought for a moment, imagining a frustrated and angry Rodion, ignoring him or avoiding him while struggling with his green-eyed monster. Maybe that would be the push the others needed. Seeing him, or her, with someone else.

It took the cogs in his brain a moment to turn, but when they did he grinned wickedly. “Actually, no. We should.” He smiled smugly, “Hear me out.” He began. “What if we only pretended to date one-another?” He suggested. “Just to make them jealous. Something mutually beneficial. Of course we wouldn’t really have to do anything behind the scenes. A little PDA, hand holding, I can give you a rose for Dragobetele coming up and write you a love letter. Venera would probably shake with frustration. Could be the push she needs?” He offered. “And Rodion has never seen me serious about a girl.”

He moved closer to her, eager for this to work. “And of course, you know, I wouldn’t take any other girlfriends. And if you and your gothic princess kissed when you were ‘with’ me, I wouldn’t be upset at all. Same with my artistic flying Adonis, of course, I hope.” He teased her lightly. “We’re good friends anyway, would have plenty to talk about when we’re alone together.” He was really trying to sell this. “Might even give the two of us some space from them, so they can miss us a little. I want you to be chased, Polina. You deserve that. And so do I.”

Polina gave a relieved sigh and a smile, as Nikon said she wasn’t exactly his type. In any other situation she would have been quite offended, spend hours in the mirror trying to figure out what was wrong with her and then just hibernate in her bed for a while and mope over such a mean comment. However, the awkward situation she had been fearing was now non-existent and she narrowed her eyes as he said that they would be jealous of them. She wasn’t so sure about that, but maybe making them jealous would be a good thing?

He suggested it again, imploring her to hear him out and she turned to face him more directly, making eye contact to show that she was listening. “Pretend to date?” She mouthed back, taking the proposition in. Something to make Venera and his mystery boy jealous… She bit her lip, unsure of herself, if she could go along with it, but Nikon kept going, kept selling the idea to her. A rose for Dragobetele did sound nice, and having a love letter for the first time too. Even if it wouldn’t really be real, it was still a nice gesture. And of course, the idea that it would make Venera so frustrated that she’d actually make the first move was probably the biggest selling point. “Rodion, eh?” Polina broke into a teasing smile as she suggestively waggled her eyebrows as Nikon finally revealed who he liked in return. She didn’t know him personally, but he seemed decent enough.

She smiled slightly as Nikon said he wouldn’t take other girlfriends while they were ‘together’. It was comforting to know that he would be so chivalrous. “Me? Kiss Venera?” Polina squeaked, a strong blush spreading across her face as she raised her hands to behind them. The idea thrilled her, but also terrified her. She had never kissed anyone before. “I wouldn’t mind you kissing him either.” Polina quietly muttered, as she slowly lowered her hands, the blush still remaining.

He had a good point. They were good friends anyway, it wasn’t as if spending time together would be weird. She could probably learn a lot from Nikon too, what to do, what to say, what not to say… Polina slowly started nodding to herself. It could work. “Thank you,” Polina smiled, as Nikon said she deserved to be chased. That was what she wanted, what they both wanted. All she had to do was say yes to being a pretend girlfriend. How hard could it be?

“Alright. Let’s do it. I’m… I’m okay with it.” Polina smiled brightly at him, hoping this was the right decision to be making.
