“No need to plan every minute, Killian,†Billie chastised airily, a small smile on her face as she glanced his way. It was funny coming from her, to him; she’d shared all of her favourite studying stationery and helpers with him months ago, from magical dictation calendars to auto-complete lists. She wasn’t one to bring up her own schedules as any kind of opposition to other people’s suggestions, but she did love her planners.
“Good idea,†Billie said, thinking that she could always do with more stationery supplies, too. Something she and Mavis had in common, even if she wasn’t so drawn to the glitter and the bright colours. She gave her a smile, too. “I think I want a milkshake,†she added. It was quite cold out here, but it would probably be warm enough for one when they went inside. Which would be soon, she thought, because even though it wasn’t warm at all, she knew her cheeks would burn if she stayed in the direct sun for too long. She tugged the edges of her sleeves down absentmindedly.
The blonde glanced at her friends, the small smile lingering as she looked back ahead. After coming out of her relationship, Billie had really started noticing Hogwarts’ couples more. She found herself curious about so many little details; did they go on dates in Hogsmeade? Did they share friends? Were they in the same year? Did they kiss in empty classrooms?
Billie had been just a touch nervous when she’d first suspected that Ki and Mavis might get together. As much as she tried to keep all of her feelings about Phillip, and the breakup, and her own excavation of her past trauma, contained, she and Killian had really been growing close; he seemed to know what to ask to get her to open up. He pushed her — gently — to share. She’d been so grateful, every step of the way. So nervous, then, to lose that safe, close space.
On top of that… She hadn’t really had any male friends who’d had a girlfriend before. Owain had sort of been her friend, but she only knew him through Barbie, so it was simple. Phillip had been so jealous of Killian, and she’d been nervous to be on the other side of that, and anxious about what it might do to the dynamic of the group, especially now that she was starting to feel (a little) less like an impostor with them. In a less rational moment, she’d imagined slowly extricating herself from Killian and the rest of them socially so that things would be easier for them all.
But… It didn’t seem to be a problem. She and Ki were closer than ever. She and Mavis were closer than ever. It was easy.
Best keep it so, she thought, gently and intentionally turning left rather than right as they got to the town’s main strip of shops, leading them away from the cafe she and Phillip used to go to. “Just in here, maybe?†she asked the others, gesturing to one of the small, cozy cafes on the other side of the street. She’d let them pick.
