If we did go for a recognised disease though, I'd be less inclined to go with dragon pox or spattergroit. I can't remember specifics, but doesn't dragon pox leave people green and spattergroit require you doing something naked to cure? Though it would make more sense to pick an already established disease.
A possible cure for Spattergroit was once suggested by a portrait of a medieval Healer to be taking the liver of a toad, binding it tight about the victim's throat and standing naked by the full moon in a barrel of eels' eyes. It's unknown if this procedure actually works, or if it is an unused medieval remedy.
